It may be less accurate than what water-quality testing facilities can perform, but it should do, if you do not have that much money to spare.
The next step is for you to decide what kind of system you will use. You have the option of faucet-mounted water filtration system. This is the most inexpensive and the most popular kind because it is easy to install. It does, however, require frequent filter replacements.
An in-line system, on the other hand, is mounted directly on to the plumbing system. This is more expensive but nonetheless, more comprehensive. You also will not have to frequently change the filters. Do realize that you still need to occasionally replace the filter.
If the test reveals that the water has chlorine, pesticides, chloroform, and organic chemicals, you have the option to use an NSF-certified carbon filter for both kind of system. Be aware that carbon filters do not completely filter lead, fluoride, microbes, and chloroform.
An in-line reverse-osmosis osmosis filtration system is best if the water test shows presence of sodium, nitrates, ferrous iron, lead, organic contaminants, and fluoride. The downside to a reverse-osmosis system is that it wastes so much water. It takes about 4 gallons of wasted water to produce a gallon of clear, drinking water. Should the calcium count in the water be high, you will have to make use of water softener with the system.
